Oktoberfest Weekend Race Report
Thursday: Futures race
Qualified 8th of 40 cars for the event
Matt started outside front row and led all 25 laps, but not without a challenge. The car got very tight and the second place car was gaining on him every lap, but Matt fought very hard for the win by a fender as they battled side by side the last few laps.
Matt’s Thoughts After the Race: “Wow! That was like 25 qualifying laps in a row! It was awesome to get my first win of the year here at Oktoberfest. It is such a great tradition in Wisconsin and it means a lot to me and my team and fans to get a win at this great event. I got out front and thought I would be able to maintain or pull away, but the car got tighter and tighter each lap. The last couple of laps all I could do was to run as fast as I could and hold the 11 car off for the win.
Friday: Dick Trickle 99
The Dick Trickle 99 is a unique three segment points race of 33 laps per segment named after Wisconsin short track standout Dick Trickle.
Qualified 11th of 50 cars for the event
First segment: Started 10th, finished 6th
Second segment: Started 11th, finished 9th
Final segment: Started 6th, finished 4th
OVERALL: tied for 3rd in overall points, however lost the tie breaker by one position in the final segment.
Matt’s Thoughts After the Race: “We had a great car all night. Chris Bires made the right adjustments between the race segments and we went forward each of the segments. In the last segment the outside line didn’t go and I fell back from 6th to about 9th and had to use my tires up to get back up to fourth. I think a couple of more laps and I would have had third from Dan Frederickson. We definitely had a great car tonight!
Saturday/Sunday: ASA Midwest Tour Oktoberfest 100
Qualified 6th of 35 cars for the event
Qualifying feature: Finished 6th of 16
Feature: Started 6th, Finished 12th
Matt started on the third row outside and in the first 20 laps the car was fast as he moved up to the fourth position by a Lap 30 caution which retired many cars including Matt’s coach Tim Schendel. The race would go green the rest of the way. Matt’s car tightened up quite a bit as the race went on and he was unable to keep the car on the bottom of the track which is essential at LaCrosse. Matt fought hard and stayed on the lead lap, finishing 12th.
Matt’s Thoughts After the Race: “I felt really confident going into the ASA race that we had a winning car, it was that strong, but with the sun being out today and the track getting very slick our setup was not quite where we needed it to be. Overall, it was a great weekend and my team worked really hard this weekend and all year long to get me to the Rookie of the Year and Fifth overall in points, I can’t thank them all enough!”
