Oktoberfest Race Weekend
WEST SALEM — Matt Tifft knows he isn’t living a typical 16-year-old’s lifestyle.
Instead of spending his weekends with friends, the Hinckley, Ohio, native is zooming around a track at 100 miles per hour, fending off some of the nation’s top drivers as a rookie on the ASA Midwest Tour.
Tifft leads the Rookie of the Year standings and is fifth on the overall points standings, and he just celebrated his 16th birthday back in June.
“I knew race cars before I knew anything on the streets,” Tifft said. “I was going 150 (mph) before I was going 25.”
Tifft said he’s been driving go-karts since he was 11 years old and then climbed into an ASA Super Late Model car for the first time when he was 14. Since then, he’s taken off — literally.
