Sudden Change of Plans leads to 5th place result
Matt and the BJ McLeod Motorsports team were planning to run the Bright House 100 event at Orlando Speedworld (FL) this past Friday, March 9. However, the skies threatened all day, and torrential rains followed, leading to the event’s cancellation. On the way back from the track, being the avid racer, Matt started searching on the web for other potential races the next day even though he was planning to leave the next morning back to Ohio. It was discovered that Citrus County Speedway (FL) was racing the next evening. After a flurry of discussion and logistics and pleading with his parents, the team headed to Inverness, FL where the track is located the next morning.

Last year, Matt had a surprising 2nd place finish in his first visit to this track, which he calls one of his favorites, under a scorching sun last August. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the track’s management had done some repaving since the last time the team had visited the small, tight-cornered venue. This led to a very quick learning curve on how to drive the track and also led to many set up changes by crew chief BJ McLeod in rapid-fire succession during the three practice sessions. In the feature event, Matt started 14th; a very challenging starting spot as passing is at a premium on this track. After having a personal goal of a top 10 finish, Matt surprised himself and the team, methodically working his way up to a 5th place finish in just 35 laps.

Matt and the BJ McLeod Motorsports team are looking forward to their first visit to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL on March 23. The track is famous for hosting the premier Super Late Model event of the year, The Snowball Derby, early each December. They will be taking a ‘new’ car with a ‘new’ motor to the event. It should be a great learning experience for the up and coming steering wheel holder (as Matt refers to himself as).
