Valiant Effort at Milwaukee Mile
Matt and the Iron Eagle Racing Team competed extremely successfully at the famed Milwaukee Mile this week for the ASA Midwest Tour, Howie Lettow Memorial 150. The super late model race featured many current and past NASCAR stars including Matt Kenseth, Rusty Wallace, David Ragan, David Stremme amongst many others. It also brought the best super late model racers from all across the country for an ‘all star’ type event. The field was likely the toughest of any event anywhere in the country for this class of racing.
Matt out qualified many of the NASCAR stars, and ended up positions shy of making the field on his qualifying time. However, he fought his way into the race by finishing 3rd in the qualifying heat race. Starting in 31st position of the 42 car field, Matt quickly moved his way up the leader board, until the “big one” struck near lap 50. Matt and several other racers were caught up in a wreck not of his doing, and there was no place to go to avoid damage. The car came back to the pits on the wrecker, with severe front end damage. The Iron Eagle team worked extremely quickly to get Matt back out on the track just 20 laps later. This was very helpful as the goal was to preserve his lead in the ASA Midwest Tour Rookie of the Year & Points battle. Matt and the team did just that as he soldiered on the rest of the race, maintaining the points lead and gaining one spot in the overall points battle to 8th position.
